New leaders for the St. Louis Province of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet (CSJ) began their five-year term this month. The team members are: Sisters Maureen Freeman, Mary Margaret Lazio, Marilyn Lott, Rita Marie Schmitz and Linda Straub.

Before taking office, four of the team members served in local ministries that are well-known in the St. Louis area.

Sister Mary Margaret Lazio, a registered nurse, was the night supervisor at CSJ-sponsored Nazareth Living Center in Oakville since 2007. Sister Marilyn Lott was the staff chaplain at St. Louis University Hospital for the past 10 years.

Serving in education, Sister Rita Marie Schmitz recently retired from CSJ-sponsored Fontbonne University after 44 years. And, since 2000, Sister Linda Straub was the campus minister at the Catholic Student Center at Washington University.

Sister Maureen Freeman from Terre Haute, Indiana, recently retired from her role as director at the White Violet Center for Eco Justice, a unique ministry that provides opportunities for people to participate in creating just and sustainable systems.

Surrounded by sisters, associates, family and friends, the new leaders were affirmed on June 28 at a ceremony at the motherhouse in south St. Louis, where the province is headquartered. See a video slideshow of the affirmation.
