Fontbonne U Launches Year of Sustainability

Fontbonne University began its academic year with convocation ceremonies featuring guest speaker Jean Ponzi, a sustainability expert and host of “Earthworms” on St. Louis' radio station KDHX.

Ponzi is a frequent “green” spokesperson for local and national media. She has written a monthly column for The Healthy Planet magazine since 1997, and she has produced and hosted the weekly environmental radio talk show “Earthworms” on FM-88 KDHX for over 24 years. She also hosts “Growing Green St. Louis” on 550-AM KTRS.

She addressed the campus community with a speech titled “Green Goes with Everything: Perspectives on Sustainable Living for Human Beings.” The ceremonies were held Aug. 28 in the university’s Dunham Student Activity Center.

Her speech is the first of many activities scheduled for the university’s 2013 Dedicated Semester:  Sustainability:  Small Steps, Giant Leaps.  The dedicated semester is an annual tradition that invites students, faculty, staff and the community at large to examine the relevance and impact of a common theme.

This year’s theme will be represented in more than twenty academic courses and will be featured in numerous social events, presentations, movie viewings and field visits. The goal is to inspire and challenge each participant to evaluate personal choices and actions in relation to an increasingly populated and complicated planet, according to dedicated semester committee officials.

In the spirit of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, living an environmentally sustainable lifestyle has been a topic of interest for Fontbonne many years, continuing to strive to find ways to ensure St. Louis remains beautiful, healthy and vital for generations to come.

Fontbonne University is a Catholic coeducational institution of higher education offering liberal arts and professional programs, as well as evening and online formats for busy adults. Fontbonne was founded in 1923 and is sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.
