HeartLands Conservancy invites all communities, individuals, and organizations to participate in “The Mounds –America’s First Cities: A Feasibility Study." It will look to national models in elevating the status of Cahokia Mounds as well as connecting other mound sites remaining in the Southwestern Illinois and St. Louis Region through thematic interpretation. This study will inform the feasibility of an appropriate national designation and process by which to protect, connect, interpret, promote, and preserve the prehistoric Mississippian Mounds civilization that once thrived in the region.
This study will consist of public outreach and listening sessions, research case studies of existing models, and inventory existing resources to provide a connected interpretive network. The study will also assess the impact of a national-level designation on regional tourism, economic development, and improving the community’s quality of life. As part of the feasibility study, the project team is hosting three regional meetings, nine community meetings, and a final presentation.
