On September 13 CSJ Associate Diana Oleskevich, justice coordinator for the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, joined representatives from other non-profits at a meeting with Senator Roy Blunt's staff to share concerns and stories of real people, our dear neighbors, who are being directly impacted by federal budget cuts.

Also on the agenda: to share NETWORK's (a national Catholic social justice lobby) "Mind the Gap" program on wealth and power and poverty connections; to focus on job creation and generation of additional revenues; to cut wasteful spending in military budget and elsewhere that diverts funds from job producing investments; and to promote the Circle of Protection campaign for the vulnerable, an interfaith effort on why we need to protect programs for the poor.

"It was a worthwhile meeting with a productive discussion of our coalition budget issues," says Oleskevich. "We began to build a personal relationship with Senator Blunt's staff.  I hope that Sen. Blunt will indeed seek bi-partisan compromises in the budget negotiations."
