60th Jubilee

Sister Laverne Mary Aufmuth was born in St. Louis, Missouri. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1956 and was received into the novitiate as Sister George Ellen in 1957. She earned an associate’s degree in nursing from Penn Valley Community College in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1979.

Sister Laverne dedicated more than 50 years of service in nursing.

Her nursing ministry began in St. Louis in 1959 at Nazareth Convent as a staff nurse. She was as a nursing student at St. Mary’s Hospital in St. Louis from 1963-1964. After another year at Nazareth Convent, she went to Kansas City to serve at St. Joseph Hospital.

In 1968, Sister Laverne did additional studies at the Institute of Rehab Medicine in New York, then returned to Nazareth Convent in St. Louis.  She then returned to St. Joseph Hospital in Kansas City for five years.

After completing additional studies, Sister Laverne dedicated more than 40 years of service as a nurse at St. Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City. In 1994 she added licensed massage therapist to her role as well.

Sister Laverne officially retired in 2011, and continues volunteering at St. Joseph Medical Center.
