Sister Donna Loretto Gunn, baptized Virginia (Ginger), was born in St. Louis, Missouri. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1956 and was received into the novitiate in 1957. She earned a bachelor’s degree in speech and drama from Fontbonne College in St. Louis in 1961, a master’s degree in speech and theater from Indiana University in Bloomington in 1969 and a certificate in gerontology from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 1974.

Sister Donna served in education for the first 14 years of ministry. In the early 1960s, she taught in St. Louis at All Saints Grade School and Rosati-Kain High School. From 1961 to 1965, she taught at St. Mary Grade School in Littleton, Colorado. For the next nine years, Sister Donna taught in Kansas City, Missouri, first at St. Teresa’s Academy and then at Avila College.

After taking one year to gain her certification in gerontology, Sister Donna spent the next 14 years working in geriatric care. Throughout the 1970s, she served in various positions, beginning as a geriatric care administration intern at the Jewish Geriatric Center in Kansas City, Missouri. In St. Louis she opened and was the manager of the San Luis Apartments; director of housing programming at Cardinal Ritter Institute and a consultant on aging for the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, St. Louis province, which she continued through 1983. From 1983-1988, she was the coordinator of parish programs for the elderly at Cardinal Ritter Institute.

From 1988 to 1996, Sister Donna served in leadership for the St. Louis province as province director.

For the next 17 years, Sister Donna dedicated her ministry to the people of Mississippi, first as the director of parish social ministries at Catholic Charities in Jackson, diocesan disaster relief coordinator during Hurricane Katrina, then as the coordinator of special projects at Sacred Heart Parish and Family Center in Camden, Mississippi.

Since 2014, Sister Donna has lived in St. Louis, serving as the mission advancement advisor for the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, St. Louis province.
